Abstract
The History of Literacy has been an important field of research in Brazil in recent years, emphasizing, among other things, methods and processes of the teaching of reading and writing, materials for literacy, particularly textbooks, life stories and careers of literacy teachers, etc. In the research that we have been conducting since 2001 we have focused on the analysis of books designed to teach reading in Rio Grande do Sul between the 1950s and 1970s because in this period there was an intensive production of textbooks. In this paper we present some of these books written by female authors from Rio Grande do Sul between the 1950s and 1970s, trying to show how they reveal the meanings and ways of teaching reading in Rio Grande do Sul in that period.
