Cyanobacterial characterization and composition in the flat microbial mats from Araruama Lagoon, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil
Abstract
The Araruama Lagoon (22º 50’ - 22º 57’S and 42º 00’ - 42º 44’W), Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, was influenced by a semi-arid regional climate with a great precipitation and evaporation deficit ratio. The aim of this study was to characterize the cyanobacteria assemblage and the microbial mat type found in the floor of Araruama Lagoon looking for their relations with environmental parameters and future comparisons with similar features in the fossil records. The taxonomic analysis was made with fresh and permanent slides intending to evaluate its morphologic characteristics. The study was based on monthly sampling between July and December of 2004. The species Schizothrix friesii (Agardh) Gomont, 1892 and Microcoleus chthonoplastes (Thuret) Gomont, 1892 are the main cyanobacteria in the flat mat.
