Thinking about color and the ‘Reality Effect’ in the cinema

Abstract

A great number of different views regarding realism has been in evidence. Whether greater realism in the cinema is welcomed or whether it is criticized, there is no doubt that realism is always a matter of concern in discussions about cinema’s vocation. It is not easy to define realism, and even though the general opinion is that realism is a determining factor in the cinema, it was not always the only ideological need responsible for the introduction of new technologies into the cinema. This article will situate color within this perspective.

Pós-doutorado em Cinema pelo International Institute - University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) - USA; Doutorado e Mestrado em Estudos de Mídia pela University of Sussex - Inglaterra; Graduação em Arquitetura e Urbanismo pela Universidade Federal de Pernambuco - UFPE. Bolsista de Produtividade em Pesquisa do CNPq; Professora Associada II (DE) do Departamento de Artes da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN); Coordenadora do Grupo de Pesquisa Linguagens da Cena: Imagem, Cultura e Representação; Professora permanente do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Geografia (PPGE) da UFRN. Atua como pesquisadora na área de Cinema no contexto dos seguintes temas : estudos sobre a imagem fílmica e o espaço; olhares imagéticos sobre a cidade, a arquitetura e o espaço urbano; cultura visual; culturas moderna e pós-moderna.
