Abstract

This article analyzes the contents of two conferences, published in 1913 in A União newspaper, the official press agency of the state, inserted in the ideals of the movement Popular University, created by President of Parahyba do Norte João Pereira de Castro Pinto, throughout the years of 1912 to 1915. The press becomes a source for the history of education, seeing their ties with society and the possibility of seizing the place for education in that context. The analysis of texts to claim that the discussion around the implementation of a Popular University in Parahyba do Norte – although this has not actually come true – put on the agenda key issues, such as primary education, women’s rights, public education, among others, to think of an educational renewal. Thus, Parahyba do Norte marks its space in this debate in the country.
