Political socialization and social capital: an analysis of the participation of youth in the political and school context
Abstract
Based upon studies on political culture and socialization, this paper tries to understand how young people internalize, decode and construct their representations about politics and their participation in the political and school contexts. It examines the concepts of social capital and empowerment in order to evaluate whether the schools are contributing to motivate and stimulate youth to participate in politics and the school context. The empirical research conducted in private and public schools of Porto Alegre (RS) suggests that the youth’s attitudinal predisposition for participating has not materialized in participative behavior, but in skeptic and apathetic behaviors in relation both to politics and schools.
Key words: political culture, participation, empowerment.Downloads
