Social capital and political socialization of youth in Brazil
Abstract
Based upon research at the national and international level, this article examines the theoretical references related to political socialization, political culture and social capital, as elements needed to understand the youth’s education and their democratic practices. The study investigates the political socialization process and social capital of the Brazilian youth at the beginning of the 21st century, in the context of the debate about the democratic consolidation in the country. The youth are portrayed as a historical and social construction, and their profile is described through the contextual impacts caused by the process of globalization, as well as through the structural impacts caused by the hybrid political culture which mixes elements of authoritarianism and democracy.
