Abstract

This article discusses the school press in the training of teachers, more precisely in the training of the first rural teachers in Brazil. It tries to understand the pedagogical destination and the contribution to the process of teacher training of the newspaper, “O Lavrador”, published by the Rural Teacher Training School of Juazeiro do Norte, state of Ceará, which was a pioneering institution for the training of agricultural teachers. The reflection tries to show that the school press as a training strategy reveals a training based on the pedagogical ideology of the so-called “new school,” which was particularly concerned with the modernization of teaching through the innovation of its methods.

Key words: pedagogy for agricultural training, school press, training of agricultural teachers.
