Abstract

In the Portuguese archives there is a considerable number of written, printed and handwritten documentation that has not yet been an object of research. This is mainly due to the dispersion of these sources and to the absence of specific scripts/repertoires/indexes. This paper discusses the contribution that these sources can make to the widening of the Portuguese educational memory, particularly with respect to the official and non-governmental educational discourse, to the school network, educational institutions, teaching contents and practices, its actors, the daily school life. After a general introduction, the contribution of some of those sources to the production of new knowledge on the action sphere of teachers, students and parents in 19th century Portugal will be shown as an example.
