Based on the analysis of content and historical context, this article presents a comparative study on the Manifesto of the Pioneiros da Educação Nova (1932) in order to show two influential interpretations that have marked the educational area in Brazil. Such interpretations are the object of analysis because they appear in two of the most read books in this area, the one by Otaíza Romanelli, História da Educação no Brasil, and the one by Dermeval Saviani, Escola e Democracia. Expressing different understandings of the Manifesto, both of them already surpassed 40 editions. The relationship between past, present and future, as well as the assumptions about why we constantly rewrite history, make up the theoretical framework used in the article. This method allowed us to elucidate the central point of the divergence between the two authors and show the reasons for the constant reinterpretation of the Manifesto dos Pioneiros throughout its ninety years of existence.
