Abstract

Brazil has a unique cultural and religious diversity when compared to other countries in the world. Even so, religious intolerance, sometimes violent, is a present reality. In this research, we intend to discuss the possibilities of using Religious Education as a space for education for peace. To do so, we built three topics, resulting from qualitative document analysis. Through texts of law and the history of education, we analyze the pertinence of the offer of Religious Education in schools today. We also present the philosophical concept of alterity, relating it to education. The knowledge listed supported a brief analysis of the educational objectives of the Common National Curriculum Base, with an emphasis on Religious Education. We concluded that Religious Education can be an important tool in opposition religious intolerance, as long as it values diversity and helps students build a personal ethics based on alterity.
