After the atrocities experienced in World War II, studies on peace proved essential to understand the dynamics of conflict, violence and democratic stability. Thus, this article aims to reflect on peace studies in Brazil and South America in the 21st century, based on data from the Global Peace Index (GPI) and the socio-political situation in the region. The theoretical reflection takes place in the critical perspective of decolonial studies, and it is an exploratory research with a bibliographic and documentary bias. The results point to the need for studies for peace to reaffirm elements about democracy, human rights and sustainability in today's society.
