From the field of Social Studies of Childhood, this article aims to discuss the ethical and methodological dimensions of a research project with (and on) preschool children. Methodologically, the research evidence consists of the ethical discussions emerging from a study on the production of oral narratives, in mediated contexts, by a group of 5-year-old children. Through the analysis of the reflections present in the researcher’s field diary, resulting from the development of the investigation, two units were defined: a) adult’s ethics, presence and listening: the exercise of being with children; and b) children’s participation in the research: the intricacies of methodological discussions. Based on the analysis, it is possible to infer that, in research with (and about) children, ethics precedes methodological choices. Furthermore, the relevance of a researcher to exercise listening, reflexivity and alterity in studies with children is highlighted.
