This study aimed to map and present how national research discusses the schooling of students enrolled in specialized institutions in special education and/or special education schools. The Systematic Literature Review was used and it showed that schooling in these institutions is limited to the initial years of elementary school, the pedagogical work focuses on individualized teaching, starting from playful and concrete activities and with little relation with the scientific content. In times of inclusion, these institutions are still a necessary space in the opinion of parents and teachers, not as a space that promotes schooling and academic progression, but as a place of reception, affection, care, playful activities, among others. This finding emerges the discussion about such institutions that are legally proposed as an educational space, but denote not effectively fulfill their function with regard to schooling.
