Abstract

In the present study, we address the presence of metaphor and metonymy for the expansion of Fauna and Flora vocabulary in Portuguese. We analyze the denominative variants that constitute such terminology, with an emphasis on specialized chromatic phrases, i.e., noun phrases composed of at least one of the following color names: white, red, yellow, blue, green, orange, gray, brown, pink, purple, violet and indigo. We aim to demonstrate that human perception, linguistically expressed through metaphor and metonymy, guides the categorization of concepts in this field, contributing to the expansion of terminology and the dissemination and popularization of knowledge.

Keywords: metaphor and metonymy, fauna and flora, denominative variation, specialized chromatic phrases.
