Abstract

This paper aims to analyze how certain discursive ethé are build in some interactional exchanges made through letters. For that, we based our analysis on the theorical and methodological framework of the Semiolinguistic Theory of Discourse. The main goal is to describe and analyze the build of ethos made by a not famous couple of fiancés, the protagonists of the situations of communication present in our corpus. This corpus is constituted by 12 letters exchanged by this couple, in Rio de Janeiro, in the 1930s. After conclusion of the analysis, we notice the prevalent construction of the ethos of virtue since the subjects aim to build discursive images in accordance to sociodiscursive imagery of their time with regard to proper behavior for an engaged couple.

Keywords: letters, discourse analysis, semiolinguistics, discursive ethé.
