Abstract

This article describes the possibility of using Montesquieu’s theory of the forms of government to interpret the behavior of the typical Brazilian politician. The incompatibility problem between the democratic institutions and the Brazilian culture is discussed. Montesquieu’s theory is placed in the context of Aristotle’s and Machiavelli’s constitutional theories. A systematic update of Montesquieu’s theory is proposed, approaching it to the sociological concept of habitus, in Bourdieu’s use. Finally, Faoro elements are used to explain the politic conjuncture that has produced the anti-democratic habitus of the Brazilian politician.

Key words: democracy, habitus, politics.
