The online violence spread: Violent statements analysis sent to the fan accused of racism against goalkeeper Aranha

On 29 August 2014, Folha de S. Paulo, in its fanpage on Facebook announced the post “racist act against Aranha creates commotion on social networks, and fan who was caught cursing the goalkeeper is ‘hunted’ by Internet users”. In this paper, were analyzed violent statements issued to the fan accused of racism in 7,846 comments collected until September 1st, 2014, and the connection of swearing with the fact that it is a woman, in order to understand how the dissemination and legitimation of violence in social networking sites work, specifically regarding gender violence. For the analysis the speech and power theories ‘of Foucault, the symbolic power of Bourdieu, and concepts of violence and hatred approached by Lebrun, Hobbes and Bourdieu and Butler, Laurel and Scott ’s gender concepts were taken into account.
