Abstract

This paper aims at analyzing the use of instruments of control in the management of the activities carried out by sheep farmers in four municipalities in the central region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Semi-structured interviews with closed and open questions were applied with 23 sheep farmers between January and March 2013. The results indicate that the majority of producers who use formal or informal accounting controls to manage their activities is younger, less experienced, with higher level of education and has greater productive area. It is concluded that the producers can make appropriate decisions even without historical data to perform an analysis. However, they are aware that they may be erroneously performing operations that jeopardize their business.
