Abstract

The work is based on a diagnosis of farming systems practiced in the settlements of Rio Grande do Sul, in the 2004/2005 harvest, through structured questionnaires applied per family. Its aim was to identify the situation of production and income and gather other auxiliary information in a sample of 2,225 settled families. The data grouped by region showed big regional differences in production systems and earnings. The results indicated that the employment of typologies can improve the design and implementation of development policies for these areas. The agricultural revenues were lower than expected in comparison with the minimum salary, considering that it was one of the worst years in the state’s agricultural history due to the strong drought.

Keywords: farming systems, rural settlements, agricultural income.
