This paper deals with the sugar cane production based on family farming in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Its goal is to analyze the characteristics of sugar cane production in that state and the specificities of that production based on family farming through a case study conducted at the Cooperative of Sugarcane Producers of Porto Xavier (Coopercana). Its methodology consists of an exploratory study through interviews conducted with sugar cane producers affiliated to the Cooperative. The sugarcane production in that region is linked with the growing of food staples, and a major part of their activity is controlled by the cooperative. The activity does not receive any incentives from the state and also faces problems related to the lack of labor. However, it proves to be a more secure and stable source of income generation for producers and is gaining ground in the region.
Key words: sugar cane, family farming, Rio Grandedo Sul.
