Favors of the glorious martyr: Jesuitical memory on the intervention of St. Sebastian at Rio de Janeiro’s foundation, 17th century
Abstract
The article analyzes a Jesuitical narrative corpus on the topic of Saint Sebastian’s intervention at the origins of Rio de Janeiro. Built up between the last decade of 16th century and the mid-17th century, based on Padre Anchieta’s biographies and other Ignatian writings, the general discourse asserts the miraculous protection of the saint against French Calvinists and Tamoio Indians at the epoch of the city’s foundation. Th is memory idealizes the action of Society of Jesus into the “sterile vineyard” of Portuguese America and attests the conversion of heathen, based on a supposed testimony of the Indians. Particularly, the topic is a sacramental re-foundation of the city of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro.
Key words: Jesuits, Rio de Janeiro, Saint Sebastian, miracle, memory.
