A proposal of an iconographic guide to fossil amphibians: An useful tool in phylogenetic systematics
Abstract
This work aimed the assembling of an iconographic data basis to fossil amphibians, gathered in a single volume, in order to optimize the time spent when searching for useful characters in cladogenetic studies and the construction of the phylogenetic data-matrix, on either extinct or extant taxa. Information regarding place of occurrence, stratigraphic unit, housing institutions, available material, catalog numbers, pictures, schematic and interpretative drawings was assembled. The data bank that supports the iconographic guide under construction preliminarily deals with fossil temnospondyls. Such tool has been proven useful by putting together the available data for any group of taxa and could be expanded in the future to other groups of fossil invertebrates.
Key words: iconographic guide, Amphibia Temnospondily, phylogenetic systematic.
