This article discusses three films by German artist Harun Farocki – Industry and photography (1979), As you see (1986) and Counter-music (2004) – showing how he combines photography, cinema and other technical devices to create an intricate mesh of political and economic relations that precedes and prefigures contemporary audiovisibility. Making use of montage operations and voice-over comments, Farocki investigates various incidences of audiovisual media in the field of human experience, directing his critical view to the gradual technical improvement of vision machines, from the first industrial processes to the appearance of devices guided by calculated image.
