In the 1970s and 1980s, popular communication experiences arose throughout Brazil, with a vast production of materials, which contributed to social awareness and organization of popular struggles in the period. These materials make up collections of documentation centers, such as CPV (Centro Pastoral Vergueiro) and CEMI (Centro de Comunicação e Educação Popular de São Miguel Paulista), funded by progressive sectors of the Catholic and Protestant Church, today under the risk of being lost due to a lack of political will. The objective of this article is to identify the reasons for the lack of investment in the preservation of these collections, as well as to discuss the contribution of the Catholic Church and the role of leadership in the context of popular communication practices developed in the period. The study was based on bibliographical and documental research, and in-depth interviews - in the oral history modality - with the protagonists of the referred centers at the time. We conclude that despite the importance and historical significance of the experiences, the collections preserved so far are the result of the efforts of people, then militants of the popular cause, given there has been no provision and support of the institutions for its conservation and availability for public access.
