Based on the art installation named Racial Consumption by Jean-François Boclé and focusing on discussions about consumption and culture, this essay proposes some thoughts about possible similarities between the colonial period and the current consumer society in respect to matters of identity. It is grounded by the contributions of Bakhtin (2010), Bhabha (1998), Fanon (2008) and Hall (2006) in the culture field; and Bauman (1999, 2005, 2008) and Ortiz (2007) in relation to the consumption field, and demonstrates that, despite the changes of actors and circumstances, similar effects concerning identity conflicts, cultural subordination and valuation of human beings are generated in these two historical processes, therefore, they are issues that deserve constant looks of unfamiliarity.
Keywords: Racial Consumption, identity, cultural imperialisms.
