This article discusses the educational ideas of Rui Barbosa (1849-1923) by focusing on his discussion of the Lessons of Things and the teaching of moral and civic culture in a draft opinion titled Reform of Primary Teaching and Several Complementary Institutions of Public Instruction, published in 1883. It was written as an analysis of the Decree 7247 from April 19, 1878, by Minister Carlos Leoncio de Carvalho. The article is an attempt at understanding the position of Rui Barbosa about the use, in the primary schools of the Empire’s capital, of the Lessons of Things as a method to be employed by educators as well as about the teaching of moral and civic culture, which was seen as an important subject to educate children for life in society. In his view, the teaching of morals was important in the scholar curriculum, since it would give individuals a human and social education and the Lessons of Things should be the method to be adopted in the teaching of all school subjects.
