Citizenship education, participation and democracy: citizenship, rights and justice – a chilean perspective
Abstract
This study is based upon a research in Chile about political participation and democracy in Latin America seeking to summarize tasks for citizenship education. If proposes to face the challenge of strengthening the conditions and competence to serve the citizens in their efforts to bring their demands to the public institutions. It utilizes examples from the areas of penal justice and public security to show how it works. In a propositive way the article suggests a set of iniciatives, steps and concrete activities that could provide, on the one hand, a better relationship between the citizens’ demands and the institutions’ actions, and, on the other hand, citizenship education for democracy.
