The scientific and the political in contemporary education
Abstract
This paper analyzes the relationship between the political and the scientific discourses at two different historical moments. The first one is a moment of consolidation and enlargement of the modern educational systems, which played a major role in the creation of symbolic conditions that made it possible to give clear answers to the central questions posed by modernity. The second moment corresponds to a context of disintegration of the political and cognitive conditions that had guaranteed the stability of choices. Particularly in the ’80s and ’90s the process of disintegration of the symbolic conditions entailed the acknowledgment of the diversity of societies and a reduction at the level of choices of a desirable future. In this context the school institution underwent a particularly intense erosion process both at the level of its modes of functioning and the kinds of future it announced. The article concludes by discussing some of the referents that may structure political and scientific narratives in education that are more concerned with the restitution of complexity then with its simplification.
Key words: political discourse, scientific discourse, education.Downloads
