Abstract

This text calls attention to the urgency of projecting another organization for the modern city. In the way the city has been structured in modernity, it became unviable for human life together. Because of its option for the market and consumerism in a society of unequal people, of included-excluded people, the city dies every day a little as a space of conviviality, encounter and solidarity. What predominates is insecurity, innumerous forms of violence and uncontrollable pollution. If the city established itself in this way, this was due to historical choices; therefore, it could be reconstituted by new options based on new parameters. The city is made by the persons who live in it, although under absolutely unequal conditions. Another city is possible if we give priority to the most fragile part of its population: its children. If the city is good for children, it will be good for all. It will be more beautiful, safer, lighter, less violent and happier. Inspired by the predominant characteristics of childhood and by international experiences of “children’s cities,” the article proposes a reflection about another possible city.

Key words: childhood, city, education, public policies.
