Abstract

The paper presents an analysis of 70 online questionnaires answered by leaders of Education Policy Research Groups, from groups registered in the Directory of Research Groups in Brazil (Diretório de Grupos de Pesquisa no Brasil – DGPB/CNPq). The theoretical framework was structured based on concepts drawn from Bourdieu’s theory and also on the notions of epistemic communities and communities of practice. It was concluded that: a) there is a consensus that Research Groups are fundamental in the process of training researchers; b) the main difficulties refer to the lack of time for students to participate in all group activities, lack of funding and lack of infrastructure; c) Research Groups need to be more valued at universities and by funding agencies; and d) there is a need to carry out more research, mainly aimed at analyzing the structure and functioning of groups in the large area of Human and Social Sciences and also in the area of Education
