In On the Revolution, Arendt, in her more mature phase, develops an analysis where she compares the American Revolution with the French Revolution. Differently to other theorists and historians specializing in revolution, Arendt analyzes the feelings that led these events in different directions. Therefore, this paper intends to show that, in Arendt's view, it was precisely the sentimentality characterized by the passion of compassion and piety that led the Revolution in France to barbarism. While the Revolution in America achieved its main objective of founding the new because it did not deviate from its political objective. In this sense, understanding Arendt's insight into the advent of revolutions can help us to better understand his intellectual path and provide us with an interpretative key to deal with the complexity of political phenomena in the current world.
