Conceptual metaphors about body: A study of college students’ discourses

Abstract

People usually use metaphors and share not only knowledge but also socio-historical and cultural experiences. In order to construct a network the meanings of the body and cultures issues, this study aims at analyzing the discourse of obese and non-obese college students regarding the way they share metaphorical expressions and, consequently, conceptual metaphors about body. The discourse, which is connected to human thoughts and actions, constructs a net of meanings about body issues. Theoretical support is given by the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff and Johnson, 1980, 1999), which understands that cognition is linked to body and socio-cultural conditions in which metaphors are conventional, cultural and unconscious, besides being automatically accessed. Therefore, they reflect ideologies and ways of seeing the world. This study shows the collection of metaphorical expressions found in individual interviews made with obese and non-obese college students. The analysis deals with the explanation and characterization of metaphorical expressions, thus, enabling their correspondent conceptual metaphors to be revealed in the current socio-historical and cultural context. Results show that there is a dominant discourse about the body, with several convergences on body relations.

Ane Cristina Thurow, Universidade Católica de Pelotas

Atualmente, é doutoranda, bolsista CAPES, pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras da Universidade Católica de Pelotas (PPGL/ UCPel). Também, é aluna do Curso de Psicologia pela Universidade Católica de Pelotas (UCPel). É mestre em Linguística Aplicada pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras da Universidade Católica de Pelotas (PPGL/ UCPel). É especialista pelo Curso de Pós-graduação Lato Senso em Linguagens Verbais e Visuais e suas Tecnologias - IFSUL. Graduou-se no curso de Letras e respectivas Literaturas (Português/ Espanhol/ Inglês) pela Universidade Católica de Pelotas (UCPel). Foi professora concursada da rede pública de Ensino Fundamental na cidade de Pelotas. Atuou como pesquisadora de Iniciação Científica pelo Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) e pelo Programa de Iniciação Científica (BIC/ UCPel). Tem experiência na área de Linguística com ênfase em Análise do Discurso e em Linguística Cognitiva, produzindo trabalhos relacionados aos seguintes temas: discurso, (inter)subjetividade, efeitos de sentido, corpo e obesidade.

Liliane da Silva Prestes-Rodrigues, Universidade Católica de Pelotas

Possui graduação em Direito pela Universidade Federal de Pelotas (1997); especialização em ciência política e sociologia pela Universidade Federal de Pelotas (2000/2001); licenciatura em Letras Hab. Língua Portuguesa e Literaturas de Língua Portuguesa pela Universidade Federal de Pelotas (2005), mestrado em Mestrado Em Letras Linguística Aplicada pela Universidade Católica de Pelotas (2006) e doutorado em Letras Linguística Aplicada pela Universidade Católica de Pelotas (2012). Fez doutorado sanduíche junto ao Centro de Estudos Filosóficos e Humanísticos (CEFH) da Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP - Braga/ 2010-2011). Atualmente é professora do Programa de Pós-graduação em Letras e coordenadora do curso de licenciatura em Letras da Universidade Católica de Pelotas. Tem experiência na área de Linguística, com ênfase em Linguística Cognitiva, tendo atuado principalmente nos seguintes temas: estudos sobre o verbo e o advérbio; sintaxe e semântica do PB; Linguística Cognitiva.
