Media representation of violation of rights and violence against homeless people in Correio Web
Abstract
As part of the research project “Representação midiática da violação de direitos e da violência contra pessoas em situação de rua no jornalismo on-line” (CNPq number 304075/2014-0), this paper focuses on the ways the Brazilian electronic news media represents homeless people in news. Based on Critical Discourse Analysis, and considering the research environments of the Latin-American Critical Discourse Analysis Network, the Center for Language and Society Studies, and the Critical Discourse Studies Laboratory, this paper addresses semiotic aspects of homelessness through documentary research of news articles published in the Brazilian electronic news media about this population group. The analytical objects were texts collected from Correio Web (the website of the newspaper Correio Braziliense) and published between 2011 and 2013. Data were organized with the software NVivo and analyzed using the discursive categories proposed by Critical Discourse Analysis. The analyses were primarily focused on texts about violence.
Keywords: representation, homelessness, electronic journalism.
