The hyphen registration in writing acquisition
Abstract
With the objective of investigating how children would use the hyphen in their written statements, in this study, we analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively the conventional and non-conventional occurrences of this graphic sign present in 421 written statements made by 38 children from the former fourth grade of elementary school. The quantitative and qualitative results point out, among other aspects, the fact that the children do not seem to have, in the still initial stage of writing acquisition, difficulties to register the conventional form of this sign, once a considerable part of the data analyzed respects the orthographic rules for the registration of the hyphen. These results also allow us to observe that, when registering the hyphen conventionally and, specially, not conventionally, the children show some clues that they are affected by their practices in oral and literate situations. This finding enables us to support that the particular usage of the hyphen by the children in their statements would be an effect of the possible image that they create of this graphic sign in the statements from their complex insertion in different social and historical practices, not only those provided by the school. This fact would indicate knowledge that happens for the children in the opacity of the writing with which they have contact in those practices.
