Expression of purpose rhetorical relation in formal speeches and oral interviews
Abstract
Besides the explicit content conveyed by the clausesof a text, there are implicit propositions called relational propositions (also labeled as rhetorical relations), which arise from the combination of parts of the text. According to Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST), rhetorical relations appear in the text regardless of specific signs oftheir existence, i.e., there is no need to include in the text linguistic elements which have the function of indicating the relations being held. The aim of this paper is to investigate the expression of purpose rhetorical relation by means of Purpose Adverbial Clauses in formals peeches and oral interviews. The research study is based on RST, which assumes that implicit propositions arise from the relations that are held between parts of texts. Parameters from Functional Discourse Grammar (FDG) are used in order to characterize the investigated constructions. These parameters are the layer in which the relationshipis established, type of connective, verb tense and position of the adverbial clause towards nuclear clause.
Key words: rhetorical structure, purpose clauses, Functional DiscourseGrammar.
