Usages, features and rhetoric functions of idioms in popularization of science communication text
Abstract
This paper evidences usages, features and rhetoric functions of idioms in the popularization of scientific texts of a Brazilian magazine called Super Interessante. The approach adopted sheds light on the questions related to the genre in which lexical units are employed – methodology also used by Linguistics of Specialized Languages. First, idioms are analyzed in their semantic, syntactic and pragmatic features, taking into consideration their cognitive processing. After that, rhetorical functions of idiom usages are evidenced following the fundaments of Discourse Rethorics. Finally, it is shown whether it is possible to establish co-relations among theme, section and term density of texts in which idioms occur and whether there are any stylistic patterns on the usage of this resource in the corpus analyzed.
Key words: Lexicon Sciences, popularization of sciences, idioms.
