Extreme Case Formulations as discursive-interactional strategy of self victimization in Conciliation Hearings
Abstract
The aim of this article is to provide an overview of Pomerantz’s (1986) work on Extreme Case Formulations (ECFs) and investigate the purpose of using this type of formulation in the institutional event of Conciliation Hearings. At the Conciliation Hearings of the Small Claims Court, we observed the occurrence of a phenomenon that was not reported by Pomerantz. In producing descriptions in this institutional setting, ECFs are used by complainants as a discursive resource to strengthen their role as a victim in the hearing. We believe that this particular use of ECFs in this kind of institutional talk is directly related to the orientation of this institution to the core goal of Conciliation Hearings, which is agreement. For data analysis, we selected two hearings which were transcribed and analyzed from the perspective of Conversation Analysis and Institutional Talk.
Key words: Extreme case formulations, talk-in-Interaction in institutional settings, Conversation Analysis.
