Corporate Governance in Sports: Analysis of the last 23 years of academic research in international journals

Abstract

This paper analyzed the profile and evolution of research in Corporate Governance in Sports. Methodologically, we conducted a bibliometric study of articles published in international journals in the area of administration, accounting, economics and finance, in the 23 years between 1990 and 2012. The analyses of citations, co-citations and frequencies, permited a number of observations: the growth of research on the topic from 2007 onwards; the Journal of Sport Management as the most cited journal and with greater degree centrality; David Shilbury that emerged as the most prolific scholar and more central; the University of Alberta as the source of the greater number of articles and most central; and Russell Hoye, Graham Cuskelly and Lisa Kikulis as the most cited authors. Este estudo é relevante para nortear pesquisa futura sobre o tema de Governança Corporativa nos esportes no meio acadêmico, sendo, assim, de especial relevância para estudantes de pós-graduação stricto sensu e outros pesquisadores recém chegados à disciplina. This study is relevant guiding future research on corporate governance in sports, and is thus especially useful for master and doctoral students and other researchers that are newcomers to the discipline.

Henrique César Melo Ribeiro, Universidade Nove de Julho (SP) e Faculdade Maurício de Nassau (Unidade de Parnaíba-PI)

Doutorando em Administração de Empresas pela Universidade Nove de Julho (2010), Mestre em Administração de Empresas pela Universidade de Fortaleza (2009), possui graduação em Bacharelado em Ciências Contábeis pela Universidade Federal do Piauí (2005), especialização em Docência do Ensino Superior pela Faculdade Piauiense (2007), e especialização em Controladoria Governamental pela Faculdade Piauiense (2010). Atualmente é professor da Faculdade Piauiense Maurício de Nassau dos cursos de Administração e Contabilidade. Linha de pesquisa, Estratégia e Estudos Organizacionais, com ênfase nos temas: Governança Corporativa, Estratégia, Sustentabilidade, Controladoria, Contabilidade e Finanças.  Membro do grupo de estudos com proprietários, representantes dos proprietários e altos executivos(GEPRA).
