Abstract

The article relates the concept of cult TV with the ritual created by telenovelas in Brazil and with a possible aura acquired by some of them. The term cult TV refers to the productions with nostalgic appeal and high worship from a specific audience. The telenovela is a television product with continuous presence in the Brazilian daily life, which founds a kind of ritual with symbolic and cultural values. Based on theoretical guidelines that approach television as ritual, Durkheim’s notion of cult and the concept of aura from Benjamin, the goal is to associate cult telenovelas with an aura that makes the program an object of worship.

Keywords: telenovela, cult, aura, ritual.
