This article is based on a research that aimed to investigate, through the ethnographic method, live improvisation practices of experimental bands that had been performing in the city of Rio de Janeiro from 2010 to 2012. It seeks to expose what determined the choice for the ethnographic approach and the consequences of that decision. It reveals the peculiarities of the research context, the challenges encountered throughout its enterprise, as well as the changes that occurred in its scope along the development of the fieldwork. By doing so, the article relates methodological issues with the emergence of analytical categories that were important for the realization of research.
Key words: experimental, improvisation (music), ethnography, communication.
