Abstract

Based on an analysis of 18 books on the theory of communication (9 foreign books and nine Brazilian), this research lists over 70 theories. These theories, however, can be grouped under seven models for the understanding of the communicative process. This paper presents these seven models, and then proceeds to an analysis of 754 dissertations and theses in the field of communication, so as to verify the occurrence of each of the models. The one that occurs most frequently (38.99% of occurrences) is the model that sees communication as a process of “signification”; it is followed by the model of “effect/function” (18.29%), then by communication as “culture” (11.37%) and as “technique” (9.99%).
