Abstract

The commitment of journalism to society goes beyond the monitoring of government decision making. Also part of the democratic mission of the press is to make known the existence of different lifestyles, so that not only minorities recognized as such, but also ordinary men have a chance to express their ideas and thus participate in the process of building a democracy. This principle has been adopted by piauí magazine, which makes it important as an object of interest to current debates about the role of the media. It is also interesting to analyze the publication through the angle of the system of social response that triggers, as analyzed by José Luiz Braga in his book A sociedade enfrenta sua mídia (2006). The recognition that society assigns a meaning to social actions and products from the media leads to the conclusion that there is a system of social response, potentially generating a useful social debate and a more critical stance and participatory society. The “Reader’s section” of piauí is an interesting focus for thinking about the possibility “of effective impact on the quality of production processes and improvement of social media”, as shown in Braga.
