Abstract

The purpose of the present paper is to analyze the share of China in the international trade of Rio Grande do Sul State in order to identify the specificities of exports/imports and the sectors where the trade was predominant in the period from 2000 to 2010. For that purpose, it initially reviews the international trade theories and then determines the level of concentration by sector and by destination through the Gini-Hirchman Concentration Index, the intensity of intra-sectoral flow based on the index proposed by Grubel and Lloyd (1975) and the classifi cation of sectors according to the technological intensity. The results found indicate that the exports to China have a high level of concentration, around 0.65, while imports are much more diversified, around 0.30, which also applies to the concentration of destinations. As for the aggregate intra-sectoral trade, it almost does not exist between the regions, resulting in values around 0.05, with an emphasis on food products and beverages.

Key words: International Trade, Rio Grande do Sul State-China, Index of Concentration.
