Abstract

This article analyzes the relations of subcontracting between companies in the local productive arrangement of processed plastics in the north of Santa Catarina. In this industrial organization most companies are small, but there are also larger leading companies in it. The local productive arrangement focuses on the manufacturing of diverse technical pieces and accessories for the civil construction industry. The results from the field research, which comprised 33 companies belonging to the branches of plastic packaging and various plastic products, show that the geographical location and the significant interactions of companies, particularly the relations of subcontracting, promote location advantages, especially for the smaller companies. The positive externalities are expressed by the presence of qualified workers, specialized suppliers, technical assistance for machines and equipment and active supporting institutions, among others.

Key words: local productive arrangement, relations of subcontracting, industry of plastic products in Santa Catarina.
