Textile industry: An analysis of formal employment in Santa Catarina vis-à-vis Ceará – 1998/2008

Abstract

This article analyzes and compares the profile of the textile industry as well as the socioeconomic characteristics of its workers between 1998 and 2008. The state of Santa Catarina and the state of Ceará are the targets of this investigation, considering that the textile industryis the sector of the manufacturing industry that employs the largest number of workers in both states, which are traditional locations of this activity.The data of the Annual List of Social Information (RAIS), from the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MTE), are the main source of the investigation. The main results point out similarities in the significant increase of the number of companies started in the manufacturing industry in Santa Catarina and Ceará, especially in the textile sector, which created the highest number of employment opportunities in both states in 1998 and in 2008. The turnover rate of labor washigh, with a predominance of female workers employed for less than one year and aged 30 to 39. On the other hand, the main differences showed that large companies are the ones that employ more workers Ceará and small businesses hire more people in Santa Catarina, and that 43.41% of textile workers in Ceará have a high school degreeover against 32.10% in Santa Catarina. There are also wage differences between the two states, as in 2008 92.01% of textile workers in Ceará and 58.36% in Santa Catarina earned up to two minimum wages.
