The Central Bank of Brazil: Institutional and Historical Evolution
Abstract
This article analyzes the main elements and stages of the historical evolution and institutional improvement of the Central Bank of Brazil. After several attempts to create a centralized federal bank during the period called Old Republic, the history of our Central Bank has three important moments: the creation of the Superintendence of Currency and Credit in 1945, the formal creation of the Central Bank in 1964 and the institutional reforms of the Constituent Assembly in 1988. It is a long history marked by conflicts and resistance. Its decisive moments happened either because of military regimes or during a Constituent Assembly. The Conclusion summarizes the main institutional characteristics of central banks that are also relevant to the Brazilian case.
