Abstract

This article analyzes the strategies of the development of agro-ecological activities in the municipality of Caxias do Sul in the period from 1996 to 2005. It considers the Project of Sustainable Agriculture (PASUS) implanted in the mid 1990s by the Department of Agriculture of Caxias do Sul (SEMAG). Through the analysis of documents and interviews with persons linked to the sector, the author tries to understand how this project was configured, both from the economic point of view and its social-environmental repercussion among the farmers. The sustainability proposed for agriculture can only be executed with production practices originating from the agro-ecological system; at the same time there are still many difficulties in implementing an effective sustainability of agro-ecology in the terms of the Brundland Report (Brundtland, 1991), viz. in social, economic and environmental terms. Taking these precepts into account, the article discusses the benefits and impediments that the activity experienced in the recent years in the municipality.

Key words: Agro-ecology, Caxias do Sul, PASUS Project.
