Abstract

This paper aims at examining the economic performance of the Southern states with each other and against the rest of the country. Specifically, the objective is to decompose the employment growth rate between its structural and differential components. In this sense, we applied the Shift-Share method for the economies of the southern region in the period 2007-2012. We employed the methodology developed by Esteban-Marquillas in order to mitigate the problems present in the Shift-Share analysis (or structural-differential). As a result of the investigation, we found that the state of Paraná showed the best performance, even displaying a greater number of sectors with specialized comparative advantages. The states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina are behind with respect to performance and sectors with comparative advantages. There is a clear deterioration of the situation for these economies. These results validate the interpretations for the fall of the Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina economies.

Keywords: Shift-Share method, employment, development.
