Abstract

The development of an Atlas of Alternative Tourism required us to apply a census type questionnaire composed of 162 questions, where social, cultural, environmental and economic information was obtained from the 153 social tourism companies operating in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. The heterogeneity of the results found, coupled with a prior identifi cation of the lack of dialectical approaches and broad analytical units in studies on alternative tourism, led us to present in this paper a regional model that seeks to explain the development processes that those companies might pursue in relation to the features underlying a utopian ideal of social economy. The model raises the following four scenarios for the evolution of the companies: failure, paternalism, privatization and social economy.

Keywords: alternative tourism, social economy, model, region, Mexico.
