Abstract

The study aimed to recognize and analyze social, environmental and cultural skills from the perspective of community-based tourism in the town of Grão Mogol, where the Grão Mogol State Park, in the Jequitinhonha Valley, state of Minas Gerais, is located. Through the methodology of participant observation, we sought to experience daily activities of local entrepreneurs, analyzing them as an aggregation of income and social inclusion through responsible tourism. The predominantly domestic tourists merely look for att ractions connected to the means of conventional hosting, thus failing to enjoy the beautiful trails and waterfalls. The crafts and folklore are not integrated into the activity’s supply chain because they do not present an identity that adds value to tourism. This tourism management becomes ineff ective for failing to seek society’s participation. Encouraging the participation of the hosts in decision making can lead to an increased self-esteem and the involvement of local communities.

Keywords: community-based tourism, shared management, conservation unit.
